Diabetes is a common condition that can have a significant impact on the health and well-being of older people. According to experts, diabetes education policies for both patient and carer are required. It has been pointed out that carers often need instructions during the starting stages of diabetes care. This is crucial as the role of carers in the treatment of seniors with diabetes is not only limited to servicing nutrition and monitoring but also in recommendations included early diagnostic, control, management and assessment actions which are believed to favorably affect the health conditions of their patients.

To this direction, many academic members of the healthcare community have addressed their attention in the quality of Diabetes Care and Education. At the end of July, the Master programme in “Diabetes Mellitus Care” at the Department of Nursing of Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (ATEITH), Greece, successfully completed the first academic year, 2012-2013. Prof. Bamidis, as external instructor, gave two lectures in this course during the spring semester. Professional carers were introduced in the notion of New Technologies in Health Education (i.e. VLEs, Web2.0 and Social Media, Mobile technologies and the Semantic web) and the necessity of Digital Skills acquisition by carer in order to enhance care quality when managing patients with Diabetes Mellitus.

In this context, the DISCOVER project was presented as an innovative solution in the improvement of carers’ digital skills, as well as, a tool for supporting their work in common diseases of elderly such as Diabetes Mellitus. As a result, many of these formal carers were interested in participating in the upcoming DISCOVER pilots or activities in Greece.
