A news article released by www.Carehome.co.uk states that less than 20% of care homes provide internet access for their residents. Statistics show that only 3,400  of over 20,000 care homes in the UK provide internet access.  Social isolation is a significant problem for older people in particular when relatives live further away. Having access to online social networking and the ability to use technology for socialising and staying in touch can make a real difference.  Access to information, debate and entertainment also helps with mental stimulation. These findings are not new for people involved in the digital inclusion agenda nor for those working on independent living projects. However more needs to be done to raise awareness of care (home) providers and carers how to encourage older people to socialise online. This is one of the mains aims of the DISCOVER project, which is developing digital skills training for carers including how to mentor older people and help them use the internet.
